The starburst - AGN disconnection

Optical studies of starbursts, AGN and their connections usually leave out galaxies whose emission lines are too weak to warrant reliable measurement and classification. Yet, weak line galaxies abound, and deserve a closer look. We show that these galaxies are either massive, metal rich star-forming systems, or, more often, LINERs. From our detailed stellar population analysis, we find that the...

The Starburst-AGN Connection

The issue of a starburst-AGN connection in local and distant galaxies is relevant for understanding galaxy formation and evolution, the star formation and metal enrichment history of the universe, the origin of the extragalactic background at low and high energies, and the origin of nuclear activity in galaxies. Here I review some of the observational evidence recently brought forward in favor ...

OH megamasers , starburst and AGN activity in Markarian 231

We present MERLIN observations of OH maser and radio continuum emission within a few hundred pc of the core of the Ultra Luminous IR Galaxy Markarian 231. This is the only known OH megamaser galaxy classed as a Seyfert 1. Maser emission is identified with the 1665and 1667-MHz transitions over a velocity extent of 720 km s. Both lines show a similar position-velocity structure including a gradie...

Starburst and AGN activity in ultraluminous infrared galaxies

We examine the power source of 41 local Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) using archival infrared (IR) and optical photometry. We fit the observed Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) with starburst and AGN components; each component being drawn from a family of templates. We find all of the sample require a starburst, whereas only half require an AGN. In 90% of the sample the starburst ...

A Possible Evolutionary Connection between Agn and Starburst in Liners

Our analysis on the two magnitude-limited samples of LINERs suggests a correlation between LFIR/LB or f(25μm)/f(60μm), and Hubble-type index at >99.99% significance level. As LFIR/LB and f(25μm)/f(60μm) are considered as the indicators of star-formation activity and AGN activity, respectively, our result suggests that LINERs with higher AGN activity may have a lower star-formation contribution....
